Deacon of the Dyers, Steve Flack and Mhairi Towler (Charity Convenor for the Dyers Craft) visited Strathmartine Community Larder at 24 St. Giles Terrace, Dundee to have a look at how The Nine Trades Charity funding awarded to the Larder had been spent. They were welcomed by Heather Breen and Melanie Kiyani (Chairperson of the Larder). The volunteers aim to provide local people with low-cost food to ensure everyone has access to affordable food for themselves and their families. Taking in food that would otherwise be wasted from local supermarkets also allows us to reduce food waste in the local area.
Their ambition is that everyone in the local community, has access to affordable healthy options for themselves and their families. A large part of this is supplying ingredients for healthy meals at a significantly reduced cost. To help achieve their ambition, the Nine Trades funded, what the Larder calls an, ‘Eco-Wall’. The wall contains various dry goods, such as pasta, rice, and cereal, with smaller containers below containing tea, coffee, sugar, herbs and spices, condiments, and essential items to create flavour and improve taste. This allows people to pick up key ingredients from the larder, encouraging an uptake of cooking within the local area as well improving health, with nourishing home cooked meals for themselves and their families instead of ready meals and pre-packaged foods/meals.
