In the Weavers Room, Verdant Works, on Friday 6th December, the Annual Dinner of the Dyer Incorporation of Dundee took place. The 28th since the revival of the Craft in 1996. This was a very special event that included celebrating the restoration of the 440 year old Lockit Book. It contains names of Fellow Craftsmen, going back before 1582. All attendees were invited to be the first to sign the new replacement Lockit book and witness the record of the evenings event.
The Toast to the Nine Incorporated Trades was given by Craftsman Doug Binnie, describing the intricate and precise methods used to restore the Lockit Book, involving many different skills and professions.
Simon Hewitt, Principal of Dundee and Angus College gave the Toast to The Dyer Incorporation of Dundee. Simon shared details of the ambitious new vision he is leading to develop a brand new campus on the site of the Wellgate Centre.
Deacon Convener, John Fyffe gave a report on the Nine and championed the important part the Craft plays in the Nine Trades. Craftsman Doug Binnie introduced new member Gordon MacDougall was welcomed into the Craft. A raffle was held and all proceeds will go to the Strathmartine Community Larder.
Craft member, Dr Mhairi Towler read an amazing poem that she has written, titled, The Lockit Book which was well received by members and guests. It will be included in the new Lockit Book to celebrate the significance of the information that is recorded in these fascinating antiquities.
Towards the end of the evening during the confirmation of office bearers, Deacon Steve Flack passed on the chain of office to the new Lady Deacon, Wendy Maltman. Late Deacon Steve said,” It has been a tremendous honour to serve as your Deacon. Together, we have achieved so much, and I am proud to have represented the Dyers and the Nine Trades. Beyond our support for charities and good causes, we’ve built a strong Craft membership filled with talented individuals across diverse fields. I am confident that under Deacon Wendy’s leadership, the Craft will continue to thrive and grow, ushering in a new and exciting era in safe and capable hands”.
Craftsman Ian Findlay gave the vote of thanks and the toast to absent friends. In particular two fellow craftsman were remembered, Past Deacon of The Dyer Craft Craig McGeoghie and Past Deacon of The Hammerman Incorporation Stan Nutt, who passed away in November.
