The restoration of the Dyer Craft’s 440 year old Lockit book was featured in the Dundee Courier today. The Dyers Lockit Book dates back to 1582 but had fallen into disrepair and was running out of pages to record ongoing meetings. The restoration, overseen by craft member Doug Binnie and Wendy Maltman, involved a number of experts.
RDW Book and Paper Conservation in Falkirk took the lead in restoring the old book and creating the new Lockit book. The Lock Shop in Dundee helped repair the broken lock with support from Angie 3D Solutions, who recreated a broken mechanism. Pretty Fly Workshop in Broghty Ferry reproduced the missing brass corners and created a brass nameplate and Dundee designers, The Malting House provided artwork for the title pages.
Deacon Convener John Fyffe MBE said” This is a significant piece of work restored daringly and collectively by all involved. The Dyers have been in existence for over 400 years, doing good work and supporting those who require it. This new Lockit book will be used for many years to come”.
The old Lockit book will be archived. The new book’s commissioning marked the historic occasion of the appointment of the Craft’s first female Deacon. Wendy Maltman too over from Steve Flack who has served the Craft for six years.
