The Courier of 12 Sep 1932 refers to a new clock for the High Street to be surmounted by "a wonderfully fine scale model in cast aluminium of the old Town House" to be placed over the doorway of William Millar & Sons, grocers & Italian warehousemen, 75 High Street. "From drawings prepared by Messrs Allan Friskin [sic - this should be Allan & Friskin] A.R.I.B.A., architects, 26 Castle Street, Dundee, the model is being executed by Messrs Brown & Son, metal workers, Montrose - experts in their class of work." William Friskin's grave is in Shanwell Cemetery in Carnoustie he died on 6th May 1966.

Gardyne's Land Clock

The trades were contacted for assistance by the Tayside Building Preservation Trust who were restoring Gardyne's Land, one of Dundee's oldest buildings. They were running short of money and required help if the clock outside the first floor was to be saved. As this is the most important of all the remaining models, the trades took on the project and arranged finance for restoration. This famous Dundee landmark is now fully restored and opertional and can be seen back in its original location.

Steeple Clock Repaired

A historic local landmark has recently been brought back from the dead to once again sound its chimes over the City of Dundee. The Old steeple in the city’s Nethergate was first completed around 1480 and has been updated in various ways during its long history. In 1872, a thorough renovation was completed for the then princely sum of £8,780 and more recently, in 1939, the bells of the clock were disconnected when it was forbidden to ring any bells, as this was to be the signal that an invasion of Britain had begun. Latterly, the clock mechanism has fallen into serious disrepair and in 2005 the Nine Trades of Dundee started a project to get this historic monument chiming again. The Nine Trades approached the engineering arm of Dundee based Xm Services Limited (a subsidiary of Michelin Tyre PLC) to see if they could help with the renovation effort.
